jee chan (all pronouns) is an artist working in the fields of dance and expanded choreography. They are concerned with questions surrounding the displaced body and what it can perform. Characterized by hybridity and syncretism, their transdisciplinary practice engages with oral histories, ancestral epistemologies and the representation of (auto)biographies, particularly among the contexts of island Southeast Asia. A member of the inaugural artistic cohort at the Rose Choreographic School (Sadler’s Wells, London) their work has been presented at Sophiensaele (Berlin), Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), DOK Leipzig, the e-flux Screening Room (New York), the International Festival of Films on Art (Montreal) and the Singapore Art Museum. jee lives between Singapore and Berlin.

ABU/ALMITAS (2026)


Tracing parallels between syncretic spirit cultures practised in Singapore and across the Bolivian Andes, ABU/ALMITAS gives shape to the longstanding dialogue between jee chan and Sharon Mercado Nogales' respective relationships to family, territory, tradition, queerness, death and coloniality. Stemming from the terms sembahyang abu (ancestral worship) and almitas (soul), ABU/ALMITAS honours, questions and reimagines inherited cultural practices of communing with their ancestors.

Born and raised in Indonesia as a royal court dancer in the classical Surakarta tradition, Naniek K. moved to Berlin in 1978, where she built a career as a fashion model. ratu by jee chan is an intimate portrait of this magnetic performer, now 81 years old – an intergenerational exploration of tradition, gender, social agency, and embodied memory.
While honoring her extraordinary life story, the work questions how tradition persists and transforms within diasporas. Ritual meets the runway in a performance driven by sound artists Rose &#38;amp; Zach, who provocatively style Javanese gamelan with electronic synths.

Through choreographed gestures and oral recollections, personal, intimate stories unravel against the historical backdrop of the Dutch colonial project throughout the Nusantara (Malay World). In the Indonesian language, bendungan can refer to a dam, river bank or sea bank. The film meanders along the Solo river, drifts through the Maluku archipelago and floods into the North Sea of the Netherlands. bendungan follows three people who live close to water bodies in Indonesia and the Netherlands, revealing among them uncanny affinities.

laut jerebu is a conversation between jee chan, Jelena Golubović and Bilawa Ade Respati. Drawing upon our respective lived experiences across Southeast Asia and Southeast Europe, we discuss issues surrounding the choreographies of language, mapping, nationhood and diaspora in relation to the construction of identity. We gather to practice songs from the Central Javanese gamelan tradition–the context in which the three of us met–as a mode and vehicle of friendship.

In syun, I transcribe voice recordings I made when my maternal grandmother and I practiced Chinese calligraphy together. These are the last recordings I made with her before she passed on. As we write, she begins to speak, sharing her past with me in vivid fragments, meandering, forgetting and recalling. I'm scrambling to grasp everything she's telling me, all these stories, every single inflection. Through the act of writing, syun is a meditation upon speech, memory, impermanence, and the state of being at a loss for words.

Drawing upon the vital connection between dance and ritual, harbor is a space where I manifest a meeting with my maternal grandmother. As a young girl, she was forced to cross a sea, fleeing a Japanese invasion of her birth home in Guangzhou to Singapore. Following her passing in 2018, I began to shift my choreographic position from one of dancing to being danced. By understanding my own body as a medium within the continuum of an extended ancestral legacy, harbor articulates the memory of displacement, migration and violence passed on through generations. A dream, a coastline, a horizon, a cry, a tremor, a ripple, a cloud, a portal.
